Dust in the Wind

Note: This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War - movie and comics.

The MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) had tied together ten years’ worth of film story. The movie is full of key moments and cool visuals ripped directly from the comics, so let’s snap into it.

Infinity War is based on multiple tales of Thanos but primarily on the Marvel miniseries Infinity Gauntlet. The opening scene introduces us to the disciples of Thanos, known collectively as “the Black Order”. They made their first appearance in the comics in the 2013 crossover Infinity which featured Thanos unleashing an attack on Earth while the Avengers were off space trying to recruit allies against aliens.

Marvel Two-in-One number 2
The movie rips a major band-aid off pretty quickly. Thanos defeats the Hulk and lifts him over the air, this is pretty similar to a famous cover image of Thanos doing the same thing to Spider-man in the comic Marvel Two-in-One.

Through the very first ten minutes Thanos appears as a powerful villain – not like other villains that try to look evil, Thanos gives us the heebie-jeebies. He defeats Hulk, Thor, Heimdall, and all the Asgardians. The movie sets the character of Thanos in an excellent way, he kills Loki without any effort giving a huge message to the audience, your heroes are nothing compared to Thanos. In the comics, Thanos has received Godlike powers thanks to a “cosmic cube”- one of several artificial objects that can make your thoughts reality. In the MCU the cube known as the tesseract, is just the space stone more or less inside a Tupperware. The scene of Thanos grabbing the cube is a similar from Captain Marvel volume 1 number 29. Plus, the death of Loki only happens at the movie, so maybe the sun will shine again on our trickster.

In the movie Hulk crashes into the Sanctum Sanctorum of Doctor Strange, he turns back into Bruce Banner just in time to warn that Thanos is on his way. In the comic book Infinity Gauntlet number one, a similar scene happened except it was the Silver Surfer who crashed into Strange’s mansion, but for now the surfer only exists in the Fantastic Four movies starring a literary hot Captain America, so the Hulk was switched in.

After learning Earth is in danger Doctor Strange opens up a portal to recruit Tony Stark and later on, they will be joined by Spider-man. In the comic book Infinity Gauntlet number 3 Doctor Strange opens similar portals and with the aid of Captain America they will recruit Earth heroes starting with none other than Tony Stark followed by Spider-man.

When Tony steps into battle he summons up a new nanite based suited armour that grows out of his arc reactor, this sequence is visually similar to the one of Iron man number 25 where the version of this armour is the bleeding edge suit in which the nanites are inside Tony’s bones.

One of the major resemblances of the movie with the comics is the scene were Thanos uses the reality stone to turn Drax into building blocks and Mantis into a living slinky. He did the same kind of torture to Nebula and his brother Eros in the original Infinity Gauntlet comic. (Sometimes is tough to bring a comic book page to live but congratulations to the MCU team for bringing us these weird horrific images to life.)

The power of the mad Titan (Infinity Gauntlet)
Speaking of torture, in the original Infinity Gauntlet comic, Thanos amuses himself using his new godlike powers to put Nebula in a state of living death. In the movie Nebula is suspended in a technological stasis field that creates a similar effect taking Nebula apart. The angle, the basic idea of torture, and the trauma it delivers are pretty similar.

Same vibes
One of the main differences between the movie and the comics is the purpose of Thanos. In the Infinity Gauntlet comic, Thanos kills half of the universe just to impress his true love -mistress Death. Wow! This guy knows how to satisfy a girl.
In the movie Thanos kills half of the universe to save the other half from poverty, starvation, scarce resources, and endless needs.

Our heroes will face Thanos in Titan, this battle is packed with lots of references from the comics. Doctor Strange’s will use several of the oldest tricks in the book: an illusion that makes your adversary believe that you are in multiple places at once (the images of Ikonn), bands to bind powerful foes (the crimson bands of Cyttorak), and of course, the mirror dimension.

One of the most iconic Spidey scenes is web shooting Thanos in the face which is a classic Spidey movement. This scene happens in the original Infinity Gauntlet comics and it transmits the vibe of the old-school Spider-man.

A gift from your friendly neighborhood Spider-man
One of the most gripping moments of the Infinity Gauntlet comics was Thanos's defeat of our champions, only to see Captain America ready to stand against him no matter what. Moreover, the image of Thanos destroying Cap's shield is priceless. Visually what happens in the movie is different but the spirit is absolutely the same, whether it's on the page or the big screen Cap can do this all day.

1v1 me noob
The snap wasn't just a game changer for the MCU, it is the most iconic visual of the Infinity Gauntlet comics and it's probably the career highlight for the mad Titan. The movie ends post snap with Captain America watching in horror as friends and colleagues fade away to ashes - I tried not to cry during this whole scene, but Tom Holland's performance made my cry like a baby - I didn't want him to go. Ironically, the original Infinity Gauntlet comic book saga was only beginning when Captain America and others suddenly saw half of the world's population vanished into thin air - this looks like the beginning of End Game.

C'mon Thor. Rule #1→ Go for the head
The comic miniseries ended with reality restored and Thanos realized that he had gone too far, the closing scene showed him resting at his farm silently contemplating everything that had happened and realizing godhood was not a price worth having.
A near-identical visual closes Infinity War as the mad titan realizes he has achieved his goals despite the efforts of Earth's heroes; visually similar scenes but with massively different subtext.

Infinity War had undoubtedly marked a before and after in our lives. We all have lived this moment of pure magic, the snap its the "I am your father" for a whole new generation and our inner child that had been enjoying all his or her childhood this franchise is jumping for joy seeing the result of this movie, but remember it isn't the end game, we will have to avenge the fallen.
I encourage you to read the comic books and watch the movies, they are full of various shades and you won't regret this marvelous experience.
